Land Manager
About Octane Energy
Octane Energy is a diversified, high-growth operator and energy investment company. We are agile, capitalized, and technically driven. Octane is a growing our E&P business with a recent legacy asset acquisition in the Permian Basin. We are a lean team focused on the acquisition, development, and exploitation of rock.
The Role
We are seeking a hard-working, commercially aggressive Landman with at least 12 years of experience. This is a "player-coach" role for a leader who will report directly to the VP of Engineering.
You will serve as the lead operational land professional, responsible for "blocking up" our newly acquired legacy position for further development. This role requires a highly self-directed landman who can switch instantly between high-level due diligence and ground-level curative work.
Key Responsibilities
- Aggressive Ground Game: Execute a leasing strategy to consolidate our new position. Maintain a network of industry contacts, identify open acreage, and secure the footprint required for future development.
- Operational Land Management: Oversee all land activities for operated assets. Identify and resolve title defects, manage ownership verification, and handle probate matters to ensure a clear runway for development.
- Engineering Collaboration: Partner with Reservoir Engineering to provide real-time commercial insights. Ensure land constraints (expirations, depth severances, Pugh clauses) are baked into engineering economics.
- Negotiation & Surface: Tenaciously negotiate contracts with mineral owners and surface owners. Secure Surface Use Agreements (SUAs) and Rights-of-Way (ROWs) ahead of the development schedule.
- Regulatory & Compliance: Coordinate land requirements for drilling and workovers, including pooling agreements, unit designations, and RRC/UL/GLO filings.
- Team Integration: Lead the integration of incoming staff from recent acquisitions, fostering a culture focused on value creation.
Qualifications
- Experience: 12+ years of broad in-house or field land experience (Permian Basin required).
- Education and Certification: 4 year university degree preferred, RPL required – CPL status preferred.
- Technical Skills: Strong title examination and curative experience are non-negotiable. Proficiency in land management software and GIS.
- Mindset: You are a "Commercial Aggressor" who views land work as a revenue driver, not just compliance. You must be willing to perform and/or lead courthouse and field work as needed.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
- Working Interest / Upside participation potential.
- Flexible work environment focused on results, not hours.
